Another month in paradise.
The first week of the month, we got snow in Dutch Harbor for the first time in a month and hopefully the last time this season.
Additionally, my crew and I switched boats. We joined the resident chief engineer to fish on behalf of a crew that headed home after their crab quota was finished. To explain my job to a layperson, I always reference the reality show Deadliest Catch about crab fishing in the Bering Sea. Now, I can actually say I’ve been on one of the boats from the show! However, the boat hasn’t been on the show since the early seasons and the crew usually tells us observers to be out of the shots anyway. With such a small crew, the boat is large and spacious. I have my own four-person room to myself right next to the TV room!
Before we left on the new boat, my friend Michelle had a sleepover on my boat, taking advantage of the TV room and U-shaped couch. The next day, Michelle left to go back to Seattle and I went fishing. It was awesome to have such a good friend on my sister boat, I don’t know what I would have done without her.
The few weeks fishing on the new boat were quick and uneventful, going immediately back out after we offloaded. After our quota was up, the crew I’ve been with for three months headed back to the lower forty-eight and I got on a new boat with a new crew.
I’m back on a boat fishing out of Akutan, confined to my boat for good health practices. My new boat is small but cozy and clean and my crew is lovely. Even though I was only on the boat for a day before my birthday on the 28th, they made me brownies and a special dinner of tacos with homemade tortillas and salsa! Other than that, my 25th birthday was uneventful. I know I’m one of many celebrating in lockdown but I didn’t expect to spend my birthday in Alaska and couldn’t even recieve any cards. I look forward to opening them and spending time with my family. Only a few weeks left in Alaska before I can finally go back home.

Happy belated birthday! That’s so cool that they made you brownies and tacos to celebrate. I haven’t listened to the Wombats in a longggg time, I should add some of their songs to my playlists! I saw them live a few years ago (right around the time they released Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life) and it was fun!
