My sentence in finally over… I’m back from Alaska!

At the end of April, I got on my third and final boat based out of Akutan. Because of COVID-19, I wasn’t allowed to leave my boat whatsoever for those three weeks I was on it. It wasn’t too bad, I’m just glad I had a nice crew since we were always on top of each other. Fishing really sucked so morale was low for the last trip, but we pushed through and got back to Dutch Harbor halfway through the month. Back in Dutch Harbor, I got to see other observers who got off similar boats and catch up. Dutch Harbor was pretty much opening as usual, so for the first time in months we enjoyed long walks in the nice weather and drinking at the dive bar. It was nice to see familiar faces and meet new people.

Here is my contract in numbers…

Number of boats: 3

Average length: ~130 feet

Days at sea: ~120 days

Ports visited: Dutch Harbor, Akutan

… and my time as an observer so far since finishing training in August

Number of boats: 7

Average length: ~123 feet

Days at sea: ~210 days

Ports visited: Dutch Harbor, Akutan, Sand Point, King Cove, Kodiak

I flew back to Seattle, put my data on the shelf and spent a few days with observer friends taking nice walks to Discovery Park and Lake Washington and shooting the shit. I wish I could have spent more time in Seattle but there really wasn’t a point as most everything is still closed.

I drove back to Tucson, Arizona in two very long days of driving, especially when my air conditioning broke down as I crossed the border into The Grand Canyon State. It’s good to be home and hanging out with my family but I hope COVID-19 closures safely lift soon so I can go shopping, travel and see the rest of my family and friends.
